Book now to reserve your spot on Dr. Mandy Hansen’s bottle school trip: March 22nd to March 28th, 2020

I first travelled to Guatemala in 1994. I was a teenager taking the semester off from college to backpack through Central America. It was an adventure made in order to explore the ruins, food, markets, and towns. However, my interaction with local community members was minimal. I can say that even though this was not a typical journey for a teen, I was very naïve and did not fully understand the complex environment I travelled. I was only faintly aware of the politics and history of Guatemala.

Since those teen-backpacking days, I learned a lot, thanks to Hug It Forward! The work that Hug It Forward does is intentional, well planned, and integrated. As an educator, I appreciate the meetings they facilitate with community leaders, the stories/individuals we hear from and learn, and the safety and care they provide. Participating in this service-learning project is an experience I value because it touches upon multiple areas: sharing of personal narratives, sustainable building practices, education, community engagement and empowerment, and the history and contemporary issues of Guatemala and Mayan communities.

It also a time to connect with like-minded souls. Our group will be individuals that want to learn and serve. Learn about themselves, the local community we serve, and from the group around them. So, if you want a little sugar for your soul, rev up your engine and join me in Guatemala!

Fundraising for bottle schools

You might also like to fundraise for Hug It Forward bottle schools. Fundraising for bottle schools is optional – it is not a requirement of participating in a bottle school trip.

If you choose to fundraise, we suggest a $250 fundraising goal, but some people choose to do more or less than this. It’s really up to you – how much you think your friends and families can give, how creative you can be, and how much time you’re prepared to put into it.
