Brighton Believes in Global Citizenship! Come with us to Guatemala to learn, lead and work with others to make a difference in the world. We’re excited to launch the inaugural Brighton Believes in Global Citizenship service trip to Guatemala, scheduled from February 13 to 19,, 2024. This exciting new program will allow students to learn more about global engagement and provide an incredible opportunity to be a part of service learning.
Brighton is committed to nurturing students as empathetic and proactive global citizens. By immersing students in the vibrant culture and pressing realities of Guatemala, the trip aims to foster deep-rooted understanding and awareness of global issues while igniting a passion for making positive change. Through this hands-on experience building a school in the local community, students will not only witness the challenges faced by marginalized populations but also actively contribute to meaningful solutions, laying the foundation for a lifetime of compassionate leadership.
This past year, Dr. McGowan had the opportunity to travel to Guatemala with a group of educators from across the country and work with the amazing staff from Hug it Forward to assist in building a bottle school in an area called Tecpan. One of the many take-aways from this experience was that Brighton could expand our current work and our students in becoming empathetic and engaged global citizens by creating a similar experience.
At the heart of the program lies the belief that true learning and growth come from direct engagement with diverse perspectives and real-world challenges. By working alongside fellow global citizens in Guatemala, participants will forge connections, broaden their horizons, and cultivate invaluable leadership skills through service. Beyond merely constructing physical structures, this journey offers a profound opportunity for students to construct bridges of empathy and understanding, transcending cultural boundaries to create a more interconnected and compassionate world.
As Brighton students embark on this transformative journey, they will not only shape the future of communities in Guatemala but also emerge as empowered agents of change poised to tackle the pressing global issues of our time with empathy, resilience, and unwavering dedication.
Please join us for this exciting opportunity to be in community, supporting a community and in doing so, leading the way for important change.
Hugs,
Kevin McGowan and Katie Falter

Fundraising for bottle schools
You might also like to fundraise for Hug It Forward bottle schools. Fundraising for bottle schools is optional – it is not a requirement of participating in a bottle school trip.
If you choose to fundraise, we suggest a $250 fundraising goal, but some people choose to do more or less than this. It’s really up to you – how much you think your friends and families can give, how creative you can be, and how much time you’re prepared to put into it.
